The University of Utah has named Charles (Chuck) Ray, MD, PhD, as interim chair of the department of radiology and imaging sciences in the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine, effective September 8.
Ray, an interventional radiologist, will succeed Satoshi Minoshima, MD, PhD, a nuclear medicine and molecular imaging specialist who led the department for more than a decade.

Since joining University of Utah Health in 2024, Ray has strengthened the department’s clinical programs, research, and educational mission, the university noted. He brings past experience as chair of radiology at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago, where he also served as interim executive dean of the College of Medicine and associate chief executive officer for Strategic Alignment at the University of Illinois Hospital and Health Sciences System.
Ray plans to continue in a clinical role in interventional radiology and in his role as editor for the Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology.
In the announcement, University of Utah also highlighted Minoshima's accomplishments. During his tenure, the department achieved national and international recognition as a model of academic radiology excellence, the university noted, adding that the department's pioneering IMAGER model of integrated finance and operations delivered substantial value to the health system with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) above 14%.
Most recently, Minoshima was selected as a 2025 RSNA Gold Medal winner.
