Dear Molecular Imaging Insider,
June has seen a cornucopia of scientific and medical research presented in nuclear medicine. In addition, a host of new products and business ventures have launched in the molecular imaging marketplace, from new SPECT/CT systems to educational initiatives.
June also witnessed the end of a long struggle to achieve reimbursement for PET imaging for Alzheimer's disease from the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). More importantly, the favorable decision may open the door to PET reimbursement for additional dementia and oncologic indications.
Cardiac PET has also been gaining attention the past few months. Our feature story for this newsletter reviews a study examining 2D and 3D cardiac PET image reconstruction using filtered back projection (FBP) and attenuation-weighted ordered-subsets expectation maximization (AW-OSEM) algorithms.
The researchers conducted a head-to-head comparison of the techniques to determine the quantitative accuracy of each protocol.
