Immunomedics said that its work-in-progress LeukoScan radiopharmaceutical was featured in five presentations at the annual meeting of the Society of Nuclear Medicine in New Orleans.
In a study from the Children's Hospital Medical Center in Akron, OH, LeukoScan imaging turned in 95% sensitivity, 90% specificity, 95% negative predictive value, and 90% predictive value for appendicitis in children 5 or older, according to the Morris Plains, NJ-based firm. In 78% of the 40 patients studied, LeukoScan accurately detected or otherwise excluded acute appendicitis and would have changed patient management, Immunomedics said.
A study from Case Western Reserve University and University Hospitals of Cleveland found that LeukoScan could be used to stage lung disease and therapy response in children with cystic fibrosis. Researchers from the University Hospital in Kiel, Germany, and the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle reported that 90.1% of a 13-patient study with surgically proven infected vascular prostheses were identified by LeukoScan, with no false-positive results.
In a LeukoScan trial in Padova, Italy, involving 220 patients with suspected bone infection, LeukoScan displayed early imaging (after 3-4 hours) sensitivity of 91.9% and specificity of 75% for 78 patients with diabetic feet; 84.2% and 76.2% for 78 patients with joint prostheses/bone implants; and 53.8% and 100% for 13 patients with spondylodiscitis.
LeukoScan also was judged to be useful in patients burdened with multiple chronic complications, according to research of 20 elderly hospitalized patients treated for known or suspected infections by the Garden State Cancer Center in New Jersey, Immunomedics said.
