The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists has expanded its certification in CT to include nuclear medicine technology as a supporting category.
The St. Paul, MN-based society had originally considered a separate exam covering only those aspects of CT used for PET/CT fusion imaging, but that idea did not receive support from those the society consulted in the nuclear medicine and CT communities, the ARRT said.
The CT exam has not previously covered the radiation physics, protection, and safety components that would have already been assessed on the supporting-category exams of radiography and radiation therapy. Since nuclear medicine candidates would not have been assessed in certain aspects of these areas, the revised CT examination will include them.
Eligibility has been restricted to registered radiographers and radiation therapists since the CT exam was introduced in 1995. The ARRT said it expects the expanded eligibility to be in place by 2005.
