GE Medical Systems parent General Electric has made an overture to British pharmaceutical firm Amersham, according to an article in Thursday’s Wall Street Journal. The approach was very preliminary, according to the article.
The rumor, which sparked sharp gains in Amersham’s stock price Wednesday, led the Buckinghamshire, U.K.-based firm to issue a press release. In the statement, Amersham acknowledged having been approached by a potential suitor, and said the contact may not lead to an offer for the company. A further announcement will be made as appropriate, Amersham said.
A GE Medical Systems spokesperson said the company does not comment on speculative news coverage.
