Siemens unveils SPECT/CT offering

PHILADELPHIA - Siemens Medical Solutions is introducing TruePoint, a SPECT/CT hybrid imaging technology, at this week's annual meeting of the Society of Nuclear Medicine (SNM) in Philadelphia. TruePoint, which combines the Malvern, PA-based vendor's e.cam SPECT imaging systems with Siemens CT technology, will be deployed initially in Siemens' Symbia platform.

Siemens is showcasing three Symbia models at the show. T includes a dual-slice CT system designed to provide attenuation correction and basic diagnostic capabilities, while T2 offers a dual-slice model for attenuation correction and all routine CT applications, said Markus Lusser, vice president of worldwide marketing and sales of Siemens' Nuclear Medicine Group. T6 features a six-slice CT unit for advanced CT capabilities along with attenuation correction.

The TruePoint technology allows molecular and anatomic diagnostic information to be captured in a single scan. In cardiac applications, it can provide details about cardiac function and overall health, according to the vendor. Symbia users can use the system to perform SPECT, multislice CT, and SPECT/CT studies, Lusser said.

Siemens has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration clearance for the systems, which will begin shipping in early 2005, Lusser told AuntMinnie.com. Pricing information for the systems has not yet been released.
