Societies lay plans for NM physician extenders

Nuclear medicine technologists will get a new avenue for advancement if a plan under development by two medical imaging societies comes to fruition.

The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) of St. Paul, MN, and the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) of Tucker, GA, this week said they were working together to create a new class of advanced nuclear medicine technologists, to be called nuclear medicine practitioners (NMPs).

The groups said the NMP program was similar to that of the radiologist assistant initiative, a physician extender profession created for radiologic technologists by the ARRT; the American Society of Radiologic Technologists of Albuquerque, NM; and the American College of Radiology of Reston, VA.

NMTCB and ARRT are working together to create a unified certification program for NMPs, the societies said. The NMP program will use a single set of standards and a unified certification process in hopes of eliminating the confusion and duplication of effort that would result from separate programs.
