Nuclear medicine firm Digirad of Poway, CA, has been fined $6,500 by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for two violations.
The Associated Press reports that the NRC cited Digirad for licensing an unauthorized doctor to operate nuclear imaging equipment, and failing to monitor radioactive materials in storage.
In the second violation, the NRC said the materials should have been stored at secure Digirad-owned sites, rather than at client locations.
In response to the first citation, Digirad asserted that the physician was authorized to use the equipment, because he had received training from an approved physician. The NRC, in turn, contended that the training never took place.
According to the AP, Digirad met with regulators in January to explain the apparent problems and fix them. The AP quoted Digirad spokesman Mark Casner as saying the company has made corrections that go "above and beyond the government regulations" and plans to pay the fine.
