Dear AuntMinnie Member,
A pair of hybrid images demonstrating the versatility of molecular imaging was given Image of the Year honors at this week's SNM meeting in New Orleans.
One of the images demonstrates the use of PET/CT to reveal a relapse of neuroendocrine cancer, while the other is a software-fused SPECT/MRI image of a patient with a foot infection. Staff writer Wayne Forrest was in the Big Easy to cover the announcement for our Molecular Imaging Digital Community, and you can view the images by clicking here.
In other news from the SNM conference, learn about some of the challenges facing the future of nuclear medicine and molecular imaging, according to Dr. Richard Wahl of Johns Hopkins University. Rising obesity levels, new "disruptive" technologies, and a lack of research funding will all impact the discipline in the years to come. Learn more by clicking here.

Radiotherapy for prostate cancer
In other news today, a new paper in the Journal of the American Medical Association highlights the benefits of radiation therapy in prostate cancer patients who are showing signs of recurrence after surgery. We're featuring an article by staff writer Cynthia Keen on the study in our Radiation Oncology Digital Community.
U.S. researchers studied over 600 men who had received radical prostatectomy but were showing indications of recurrence, such as rising prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels. The study found that certain groups of patients -- including those with what would be considered more aggressive cancers -- had higher survival rates after receiving radiation therapy.
