Effective January 1, 2015, the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) will require individuals to earn the minimum of an associate degree before they are eligible to take a certification examination in radiography, nuclear medicine technology, or radiation therapy.
The change in eligibility requirements will be published in ARRT's 2009 Annual Report to Registered Technologists for public comment.
The requirement also stipulates that:
- The degree will not have to be in the radiologic sciences.
- The degree can be earned before entering the radiologic science educational program or upon graduation from the program.
- Individuals who apply for ARRT certification in radiography, nuclear medicine technology, or radiation therapy before January 1, 2015, will not be required to have an associate degree.
The St. Paul, MN-based organization noted that the degree requirement is designed to promote high standards of care and provide a firm foundation for the evolving roles of technologists.
