MRI growth slows; PACS path project launches

Dear AuntMinnie Member,

Growth in MRI procedure volume has slowed over the last four years compared with the torrid pace of growth set earlier in the decade, according to a new market research report released this week.

Procedure volume in the U.S. grew at an average annual rate of 3% from 2003-2007, compared with a 15% average annual growth rate for the four years prior to that, according to a report from IMV Medical Information Division of Des Plaines, IL. We're featuring an article on the report by contributing writer Cheryl Hall Harris in our MRI Digital Community.

What caused the slowdown? It could be due to several factors, ranging from a maturing market to the impact of the Deficit Reduction Act of 2005 on standalone imaging centers. Get the details on the report by clicking here, or visit our MRI Digital Community at mri.auntminnie.com.

PACS for pathology

In other news, pathology has often been mentioned as one of the next frontiers for the adoption of digital imaging technologies such as PACS. But technological obstacles -- like the massive file sizes of digital path images -- have gotten in the way.

Today, a major imaging vendor joined up with an academic center to create a joint-venture company designed to bring the power of PACS to the path people. Find out how they're doing it by clicking here.
