Radiation-therapy developer Proxima Therapeutics said the first patient in Canada has been treated with its catheter-based radiation treatment device, MammoSite RTS. The device was implanted under a protocol developed at the Ville Marie Oncology Center and the Centre Hospitalier de l'Université de Montréal.
MammoSite RTS internally delivers radiation directly to the tissue surrounding a tumor, thus minimizing radiation exposure to healthy tissue, according to the Alpharetta, GA-based firm. The device received clearance from Health Canada’s Therapeutic Products Programme in August 2001 and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in May 2002.
