Medicare legislation extends pay for brachytherapy seeds

Medicare will continue its current reimbursement policies for brachytherapy seeds through June 30, 2008, thanks to new legislation enacted under the Medicare, Medicaid and SCHIP Extension Act of 2007.

Signed by President Bush just before the close of 2007, the measure ensures that Medicare does not implement potentially restrictive caps on reimbursement during that period. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) had issued a rule that would have fixed the per-seed reimbursement rate to hospitals, effective January 1, 2008.

The legislation postpones the implementation of fixed per seed rates until July 1, 2008.
