FL facility treats carcinoma with Varian's RapidArc

Doctors at Melbourne Internal Medicine Associates (MIMA) Cancer Center in Florida are using Varian Medical Systems' RapidArc radiotherapy technology to deliver stereotactic body radiotherapy in the treatment of soft-tissue carcinoma.

The Palo Alto, CA-based company said MIMA is the first facility to use the technology for that application.

RapidArc is designed to deliver image-guided, intensity-modulated radiation therapy with one 360° rotation of the treatment machine around a patient. In this case, however, MIMA designed a treatment that is delivered with a half-rotation around the patient to target a tumor in the leg.
