3D CRT as effective as breast-conserving therapy

Women with early-stage breast cancer who choose lumpectomy and radiation as their treatment option may be able to significantly shorten their total treatment time using 3D conformal radiation therapy (3D CRT).

The research comes from the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG), a clinical research component of the American College of Radiology. RTOG presented the study's results at the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO) annual meeting in Boston.

The study enrolled 58 women from 24 academic and community institutions in the U.S. and Canada from August 2003 until April 2004. The women received 3D CRT twice daily, with each dose separated by six hours, for five consecutive days. At four years the disease-free survival rate was 84%, mastectomy-free survival was 90%, and overall survival was 96%, comparable to published rates for standard therapy, according to RTOG.
