Rhode Island Hospital uses Axxent for endometrial cancer

The Axxent electronic brachytherapy system from Xoft of Sunnyvale, CA, is being used for the first time by Rhode Island Hospital to treat endometrial cancer.

The Providence facility is the first hospital to use the technology for that application since the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) cleared Axxent for uterine cancer treatment.

Axxent, first approved for early-stage breast cancer, uses a miniaturized x-ray source to deliver localized and targeted radiation treatment to reduce the risk of recurrence of the disease. It is inserted into the tumor through a catheter to the site, allowing medical staff to be in the room with the patient while administering treatment.
