Varian wins New York RapidArc install

Radiation therapy vendor Varian Medical Systems of Palo Alto, CA, has installed one of its RapidArc image-guided intensity-modulated radiation therapy systems at a facility in the state of New York.

Syracuse Radiation Oncology installed the RapidArc system, which takes less than two minutes to deliver a daily treatment. A 70-year-old prostate cancer patient was the first person to begin a course of RapidArc treatments, according to the company.

RapidArc makes it possible to cover the tumor with radiation during a single continuous rotation of the system around the patient. This makes it much faster than conventional intensity-modulated radiation therapy, which repositions the machine repeatedly for treating from different angles, according to the company.
