Varian grows Q4 sales, earnings

Radiation therapy developer Varian Medical Systems of Palo Alto, CA, has reported growth in revenues for the company's fourth quarter.

For the quarter (end-September 30), Varian posted revenues of $593 million, up 15% compared with the same quarter of 2007. Fiscal year 2008 revenues grew 18% to $2.1 billion, and operating earnings increased 24% to $419 million.

Varian said that all three of its major businesses -- Oncology Systems, X-Ray Products, and Security -- contributed to the growth during the quarter. The firm's oncology revenues were $483 million, up 13% from the same period in the last fiscal year. Revenues in the x-ray business grew 25% from 2007 to $83 million, Varian said.
