More on cardiac CT turf wars; CyberKnife and Medicare

Dear AuntMinnie Member,

Last week in this space, we discussed the turf war that's brewing over control of cardiac CT, with use of the modality skyrocketing among cardiologists, according to a recent research study.

This week we find additional evidence of CT's growing popularity among cardiologists. The installed base of CT systems among cardiology practices has tripled in the past two years alone, according to a new survey by market research firm IMV Medical Information Division of Des Plaines, IL.

The survey found that cardiologists have been installing CT in their practices in large numbers. Get the rest of the story by clicking here, or visit our CT Digital Community at ct.auntminnie.com.

While both stories indicate the challenges that radiology faces in retaining control of cardiac CT, the recent economic downturn and changes in reimbursement have radically changed the rules of the game. Stay tuned in 2009 to see how this turf battle plays out.

CyberKnife Medicare coverage

In other news, staff writer Cynthia Keen reports in our Radiation Oncology Digital Community on a controversy regarding inequalities in Medicare coverage of CyberKnife radiation therapy treatments in the U.S.

Apparently, Medicare coverage policies vary widely, and while men in one state might find their prostate cancer treatments covered, those in another state are out of luck. Learn more by clicking here, or visit the community at radiation.auntminnie.com.

AuntMinnie.com will be publishing on an abbreviated schedule this week and next due to the holidays, so here's hoping you have a wonderful holiday season!
