Radiation therapy equipment developer RefleXion Medical has sold the first RefleXion X1 system for radiation therapy cancer treatments. Stanford Medicine Cancer Institute will be installing the system.
The X1 uses a novel design that combines a linear accelerator with a PET/CT scanner in an oversized gantry. The company is developing the system for what it calls biology-guided radiation therapy (BgRT), in which the linear accelerator directs treatment photons to sites of cancer detected with the PET/CT component.
RefleXion Medical plans to install the X1 system at the Stanford Medicine Cancer Center in the next few months, with patient treatments to follow. The sale was particularly meaningful for co-founder Sam Mazin, PhD, who was a postdoctoral researcher at the school and was one of a few postdocs selected to commercialize promising innovations.
