This issue, as promised, we're featuring updates from the Clinical UltraSonography in Practice (CUSP) 2004 conference in Chennai. The meeting had nearly 3,500 delegates across all four days, with the largest number of delegates for (you guessed it) the session on ultrasound in ob/gyn.
We bring you excerpts from the presentation by Dr Kevin Spencer, consultant biochemist at Harold Wood Hospital in Romford, U.K, and the videoconference by Dr Kypros H. Nicolaides, founder and chairman of the Fetal Medicine Foundation in London.
Spencer talks about the combined use of ultrasound and biochemical markers in fetal screening and the value it can bring to identifying pregnancies at high risk of Down syndrome. Nicolaides, who has over 500 research papers to his credit, questions some well-entrenched practices such as the usefulness of cervical sutures in preventing preterm delivery.
Lastly, we bring you an editorial opinion piece by Dr S. Suresh of Mediscan Systems Diagnostic Ultrasound Research & Training Centre in Chennai. Dr Suresh makes a convincing argument on why ultrasound shouldn't be left only to radiologists.
