Dear Ultrasound Insider,
In the past, ultrasound has been deployed in the liver primarily for screening and guiding biopsies of known targets. But a greater role for the modality is taking shape, thanks in part to the introduction of second-generation ultrasound contrast agents.
In experienced hands, contrast-enhanced ultrasound is yielding similar sensitivity as CT and MRI for detecting focal liver lesions, along with highly accurate characterizations of liver morphology, according to Dr. Lars Thorelius from University Hospital in Linköping, Sweden.
In this month's Ultrasound Insider Exclusive, Dr. Thorelius shares techniques and tips (plus a vast trove of video clips and photos) for conducting noncontrast-enhanced ultrasound liver exams, often demonstrating the impact of contrast-enhanced ultrasound exams as well.
