Dear Ultrasound Insider,
Spring is in the air! While flowers start to bloom and birds take flight once more, new pioneering uses for ultrasound continue to show their promise, from artificial intelligence (AI) to the use of contrast agents.
For example, deep-learning algorithms created by researchers in China used multiple types of ultrasound images, including grayscale and color Doppler, to predict ovarian malignancies. Find out how well the algorithms performed compared to human experts in this edition's Insider Exclusive.
Also, AI has made advances in use for ultrasound breast screening. Dr. Linda Moy discussed AI's growing role in this area at our recent Spring 2022 Virtual Conference, including how it could help radiologists with their respective workloads.
In other news, Chinese researchers found that ultrasound is helpful in measuring fetal growth alterations in diabetic women who struggle with controlling their blood glucose levels. The team wrote that this may help clinicians rethink when to screen for gestational diabetes and take precautions.
Speaking about fetal imaging, ultrasound also found no links between COVID-19 vaccines and birth defects. A Northwestern University team concluded in their study of over 3,100 pregnant women that the vaccines are safe for their expectant children's health.
Plus, check out the following recent ultrasound stories:
- Japanese researchers found that ultrasound can be an effective point-of-care alternative to MRI for evaluating bone stress injuries.
- A University of Minnesota team used echocardiography to determine that there are links between lower left atrial function and an increased risk of dementia later in life.
- At the 2022 American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) annual meeting in San Diego, Dr. Susan Back talked about the promising use of contrast-enhanced ultrasound in pediatric patients with various ailments.
- Also at the AIUM annual meeting, researchers talked about how transvaginal ultrasound has benefitted from updating terminology related to transvaginal bleeding, using case reports.
