SALT LAKE CITY --- A study at the University of Massachusetts in Worchester found that stress fractures in skaters are not caused by low bone mass, but may result from excessive forces placed on a normal skeleton. Using quantitative ultrasound, they found that even skaters who had suffered stress fractures did not have lower BMD than non-athletes (Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, January 2002, Vol.83:1, pp. 122-128).
