U.S researchers measured oxygenated and deoxygenated hemoglobin/myoglobin in the capillary bed of five muscle groups during skating in upright and low positions. They found increased deoxygenation in the capillary bed of the exercising quadriceps during low vs. upright positions, which was consistent with their hypothesis that blood flow and subsequent oxygen delivery is compromised in the low speed-skating position(Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, February).
