Week in Review: Minnies finalists | MRI biopsy for prostate | Webinar on subspecialization

Dear AuntMinnie Member,

Our Minnies contest to recognize excellence in radiology has moved to the next round. The list of Minnies finalists was released on Wednesday, and our story on the candidates was our most-viewed article of the week.

Now in its 21st year, the Minnies start with over 200 candidates nominated by our members in 15 categories, ranging from Most Influential Radiology Researcher to Best Radiology Image. The candidates are voted on by an expert panel of radiology luminaries.

Our panel will now go to work voting on the winners, with final results expected in late October. Congratulations to all the finalists and good luck in the next round!

MRI biopsy for prostate

Another top article last week concerned research performed at Emory University on the use of an MRI-guided prostate biopsy technique that's performed while the patient is still in the magnet bore. The researchers found that MRI-guided biopsy was a good alternative to transrectal ultrasound-guided biopsy, finding previously unidentified cancers in 57% of patients and resulting in an upgrade to disease severity in 40%.

In other MRI news, researchers from the state of Washington ponder the issue of when MRI should be used for breast screening in a new paper in Cancer. They believe that younger women with BRCA mutations -- who are at higher risk of breast cancer -- are not being screened.

And MRI was used to discover that patients with COVID-19 are also more likely to have thromboembolism than those without the disease.

Webinar on subspecialization

It's no secret that radiology is changing rapidly, with subspecialization becoming more necessary than ever before. What's the best way for radiologists to adapt? Find out in a webinar at 1 p.m. Eastern time on October 14. In attendance will be three radiologists who will discuss ways to adapt to the growing trend. Registration is free.
