Dear AuntMinnie Member,
In today's radiology environment, it's important for radiologists to be efficient. But can a speedy interpretation be considered medical negligence?
With so-called "reckless reading" lawsuits on the rise in recent years, some experts have suggested regulating radiologist workloads. But with scientific evidence currently lacking to justify any such regulations, these efforts could result in unforeseen problems, such as an unacceptable backlog of unread images or even worse radiologist performance, according to researchers from SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY.

Atlas blamed for U.S. COVID-19 strategy
A newly published report issued by a U.S. House of Representatives subcommittee this week blamed controversial neuroradiologist Dr. Scott Atlas for a Trump Administration pandemic response strategy that it said resulted in thousands of "preventable" deaths from COVID-19.
The report claims to chronicle what it called a "dangerous and discredited herd immunity via mass infection strategy" that was "deeper and more wide-reaching" than previously known. And the report ties much of this strategy to Atlas, who previously worked at Stanford University before being hired by the Trump administration as a special advisor on the pandemic in July 2020.
Our coverage of the report was the second-highest viewed article on AuntMinnie.com this week.
And in other COVID-19 news, researchers recently analyzed how the pandemic affected CT utilization in the emergency department (ED). They found some interesting results that may affect planning for future pandemics.
Also, patients presenting with psychiatric symptoms in the ED are often imaged with head CT. But many of those exams may not be necessary, according to a new study.
