Video-capsule manufacturer Given Imaging of Yoqneam, Israel, defended the safety of its M2A capsule today, following a report in yesterday's Hebrew-language daily Maariv that a 50-year-old patient had died a few days after swallowing a Given diagnostic device. Israel's health ministry is investigating the patient's death.
Given said it has performed extensive safety tests that have confirmed the safety of capsule endoscopy, adding that more than 100,000 patients with suspected small-bowel disease have swallowed M2A capsules with no deaths reported in connection with their ingestion.
Given's shares fell 6% on the Tel Aviv stock exchange yesterday in response to the news, Israeli daily Haaretz reported.
