Clinical trials start on Philips/MediGuide catheters

Researchers at New York-Presbyterian Hospital in New York City will begin clinical trials of guided-catheter technology developed by Philips Healthcare of Andover, MA, and MediGuide of Haifa, Israel. Philips announced the news at this week's American College of Cardiology (ACC) meeting in Chicago.

Researchers at New York-Presbyterian Hospital will investigate a Philips Allura Xper flat-panel cardiac cath system in conjunction with MediGuide's Medical Positioning System (gMPS) and gMPS-enabled Guided Measurement Catheter (GMC).

The gMPS system with guided catheter provides physicians with real-time catheter tip positioning and navigation information, quantitative length measurement, 3D lumen reconstruction, qualitative 3D foreshortening indication, and landmarking. Both gMPS and GMC are limited to investigational use in the U.S., but have the CE Mark in Europe.

In other Philips ACC news, the company has signed a resale agreement in North America with intravascular ultrasound developer Volcano of San Diego. The deal enables Philips to sell Volcano's s5i IVUS system into new and installed cath labs.

Finally, StentBoost Subtract is an enhancement to the company's StentBoost protocol for improving visualization of stent expansion and apposition.
