X-ray lung CAD payments pick up steam

Dear AuntMinnie Member,

The use of computer-aided detection (CAD) software for radiography-based lung studies got a big boost last year with the release of Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes that paved the way for insurance reimbursement. Now, a healthcare consulting firm has released a new study analyzing the impact that reimbursement is having on facilities using x-ray lung CAD.

Healthcare providers are receiving between $10 and $27 per study for radiography lung CAD, according to an article in our Advanced Visualization Digital Community by contributing writer Cynthia Keen. Both large and small payors are adding coverage to their plans, the article states.

Although the reimbursement trend is encouraging, x-ray lung CAD still has some hurdles ahead. Many radiologists are awaiting more clinical studies on its effectiveness, and the technology is sometimes seen as a workflow barrier at sites without PACS. In another article in the community, we conclude our series on 3D and virtual reality in medicine with an article by staff writer Eric Barnes on a Japanese university group that is specializing in the development of virtual reality applications and surgery suites. If you think radiology is pretty high-tech already, take a look at the future of medicine as envisioned by researchers at the Institute of High Dimensional Medical Imaging.
