Computerized order entry yields benefits

Hospitals could save time by having physicians perform computerized physician order entry (POE), according to a study published in the recent Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association.

The study, performed by researchers at Ohio State University in Columbus, OH, found that switching to computerized POE cut medication turnaround times by 64%, x-rays and other radiology procedures by 43%, and lab tests by 25%. Radiology turnaround declined from just over 7 1/2 hours to four hours and 21 minutes, according to the study team.
