Dear RIS Insider,
For healthcare professionals who deal with information systems, the only constant has been change. From its humble beginnings as a scheduling and demographic profiling application, the RIS has grown to be one of the two critical components of radiology IT.
The other piece of the radiology IT puzzle is, of course, PACS. A synchronicity of the two systems is inevitable, as witnessed by the number of RIS vendors currently offering PACS products.
However, solutions to RIS/PACS integration can be as disparate as the number of products on the market. There are a number of paths to RIS/PACS interoperability, ranging from strategic alliances of multiple vendors to bundled components to applications that share the same code base.
Like any IT system, a RIS and PACS combination that works at one institution isn't necessarily the best choice at the facility down the street. AuntMinnie.com contributing writer Robert Bruce talked to users and consultants who have installed and worked with RIS and PACS products, and reports on their ideas in this month’s featured RIS Insider article.
