Medicare takes hard line on HIPAA compliance

Beginning next week, electronic Medicare claims that do not meet Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) standards will be treated as paper claims and will be paid more slowly than HIPAA-compliant claims, according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

Under a modification to the agency's contingency plan announced in February, non-compliant electronic claims will still be accepted, but payment will take an additional 13 days, CMS said. The modification had an effective date of July 1, but CMS said it will begin delaying payments for non-compliant claims as of July 6.
