Dear RIS Insider,
Radiology has been at the forefront of change and innovation in diagnostic medicine for nearly a century. But the radiology report is, to borrow a phrase from Talking Heads frontman David Byrne, "same as it ever was."
At the recent Society for Computer Applications in Radiology (SCAR) conference in Vancouver, Dr. David Weiss, clinical head of imaging informatics in the division of radiology at the Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, PA, shared his thoughts on alternative reporting strategies.
Weiss noted that the two available alternative reporting systems to traditional recording and transcription -- speech recognition and structured reporting -- could create major advantages in turnaround times and in the cost of transcription.
The downside to adopting alternative reporting strategies is user frustration, and the potential for increased distraction from image viewing, as well as the possibility of increased dictation time. Optimizing a few elements of alternative reporting technology, and tight integration with RIS and PACS, can result in improved system performance and greater acceptance among radiologists, according to Weiss.
