Healthcare informatics developer Allscripts reported that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire electronic medical record (EMR) applications developer A4 Health Systems of Cary, NC.
Allscripts said the deal is worth approximately $272 million in cash and stock for the privately held A4.
In related news, the Chicago-based firm said it had entered into an amended strategic alliance agreement with Chalfont St. Giles, U.K.-based GE Healthcare, parent company of Burlington, VT-based IDX Systems. Under terms of the amended agreement, Allscripts existing alliance with IDX will continue through the five years remaining under the original agreement, supporting the ongoing integration and compatibility of the Allscripts and IDX products.
GE will also continue to offer Allscripts TouchWorks electronic health record (EHR) application within the IDX client base, as well as its Centricity Ambulatory EMR. The agreement allows Allscripts to enter the practice management systems (PMS) market and to offer an integrated practice management and EHR solution.
Depending on the needs and size of the practice, Allscripts said it will offer the integrated A4 PMS/EHR, its TouchWorks EHR in combination with the A4 PMS, or, for IDX practice management clients, its TouchWorks EHR integrated with IDX's Groupcast or Flowcast products.
