Global spending on mobile healthcare IT hardware, software, and services is predicted to hit $2.7 billion by 2010, according to a new report issued by U.K. market research firm Juniper Research.
Juniper said that spending on mobile healthcare IT will be driven by the desire of healthcare professionals to improve patient service through wireless technology. Half of all hospitals say that wireless is the top emerging technology they plan to deploy in the next two years.
Spending on the wireless patient management systems (PMS) segment of mobile healthcare IT is expected to grow from $289 million in 2005 to $1.51 billion in 2010. A major factor in the increase is the widespread adoption of electronic health records (EHRs), which is driving the growth of wireless PMS.
Juniper forecasts the use of wireless in drug prescribing to grow from $11 million to $445 million from 2005 to 2010, a trend that will result in the elimination of two million adverse drug events each year. In the lab works industry, wireless use will grow from $3.4 million to $232 million over the same time period.
