Northwest Physicians Insurance Company (NPIC) of Salem, OR, has created a new program to promote the use of personal health records (PHR) among its physicians and their patients, and potentially reduce doctors' insurance premiums.
The iHealth service includes a practice Web site for physicians, as well as interactive secure e-mail and patient PHRs. It also is designed to automate education and safety messages for patients, including same-day patient notification, if their medicines are subject to U.S. Food and Drug Administration recalls or warnings.
The NPIC iHealth program, currently ready for access in Oregon and Idaho, costs physicians less than a dollar per day for the practice Web site and all interactive features. Patient-safety points would influence premium credits for physicians who use the service and are based on a percentage of total paid annual premiums.
