HIMSS news: EMR tops healthcare IT wish list

Dear AuntMinnie Member,

Implementing electronic medical record (EMR) technology is the top priority for healthcare IT professionals, according to a new survey released this week at the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) meeting.

Healthcare IT experts see EMR as a key technology that will garner the lion's share of HIT investment, according to an article by staff writer Wayne Forrest. Mr. Forrest is in Orlando to cover the HIMSS conference for our Healthcare IT Digital Community.

What's driving the interest? Part of it is due to regulatory initiatives in the U.S. and Canada to make EMRs available for their citizens. There is also a desire on the part of healthcare organizations to improve the quality of care for their members. Other factors driving EMR adoption include the need to address Medicare cutbacks and increase patient satisfaction. Get the rest of the details on the survey by clicking here.

In other HIMSS news, we're featuring an article on the HIMSS keynote address by Michael O. Leavitt, Secretary of the U.S. Department Health and Human Services (HHS), on the need for local control of HIT technology. That article is available by clicking here.
