Adding value with 3D; residents and CAD; SIIM coverage

Dear AuntMinnie Member,

Sending 3D renderings to your referring physicians can add real value to your imaging facility's services. But 3D can only live up to its true potential if managed properly.

3D enables radiologists to provide value beyond the written report, according to an article by contributing writer Cynthia Keen that we're featuring in our Advanced Visualization Digital Community. The story covers a series of presentations at last week's Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM) meeting on the value of 3D, and offers tips on how to properly manage a 3D lab. Just click here for the details.

In other news in the community, a new study has found that computer-aided detection (CAD) software can improve the accuracy of radiology residents when reading chest digital radiography (DR) images. Use of a commercially available DR CAD program boosted resident performance by up to 29 percentage points, while keeping false positives to an acceptable level. Get more details by clicking here.

You'll find these stories and more in the Advanced Visualization Digital Community, at av.auntminnie.com. We've recently given the community a new look, and we'd love to know what you think.

SIIM coverage

This week we're also featuring additional coverage of the SIIM conference in Seattle, which included presentations on PACS, healthcare IT, and advanced visualization. For example, check out an article on how to minimize the impact of PACS downtime, or find out how PACS is helping smaller imaging centers and radiology practices operate more efficiently.

Meanwhile, South Korean researchers describe how they transferred images from portable imaging modalities to a PACS network using laptop PCs and a wireless local-area network (LAN), and U.S. researchers found that there is a noticeable difference between lossy and lossless image compression.

Finally, learn about informatics expert Dr. Paul Chang's opinions on how radiology and pathology can benefit from a convergence of healthcare IT technologies. The article is available by clicking here.
