Speech recognition works -- even in Finland

Dear AuntMinnie Member,

Speech recognition technology can help radiology departments reduce report turnaround times and operate more efficiently, even in countries with unique language requirements, such as Finland.

In an article we're featuring this week in our Healthcare IT Digital Community, staff writer Wayne Forrest reports on a presentation from the recent Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM) conference, detailing the experience of Finnish researchers who implemented speech recognition at their hospital.

The story highlights how speech recognition is becoming a viable technology even in less-populous countries with languages that are not so common: The researchers said they were able to handle more imaging exams while sharply reducing report turnaround times. Correction

In an article published last week, we incorrectly stated that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has withdrawn the black box warning required for ultrasound contrast agents. Actually, the FDA did not remove the black box requirement, but rather modified the language required within the boxed warning, as well as in the contraindications section and other parts of the product labeling.
