VIENNA - Computer-aided detection firm R2 Technology of Sunnyvale, CA, has signed a product integration deal with Swedish PACS developer Sectra, the companies announced at this week's European Congress of Radiology. The deal is R2's first relationship with a PACS firm, and reflects the company's plan to make its CAD software available throughout radiology departments by integrating it with PACS software from other firms.
Radiologists currently use CAD at specialized, proprietary workstations that process digital images and mark abnormalities for further review. At last year's RSNA meeting, however, R2 launched a new concept called OmniCAD that aims to make CAD more ubiquitous by hosting its ImageChecker CAD software on a network rather than a single workstation. CAD applications can then be accessed from any computer with access to the network.
The Sectra relationship is the first of what R2 hopes will be many deals with PACS software developers, according to Susan Schuette, the R2’s director of business development. The companies are working on integrating their respective software applications so that a Sectra PACS user would have seamless access to R2 CAD applications. That effort is expected to be finished later this year; until then, users can import R2 CAD images into Sectra's PACS via the DICOM standard.
For Sectra, the relationship is an important new addition to its Clinical Solutions Network, in which the company inks relationships with third-party vendors covering the connection of their software to Sectra's PACS. The company is also highlighting a relationship with virtual colonoscopy developer Viatronix of Stony Brook, NY, at this week's ECR meeting.
The R2 relationship covers both Europe and the U.S., where Sectra's PACS software is sold by Philips Medical Systems of Andover, MA.
