The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) has released a 14-part update of the DICOM standard. The DICOM committee has incorporated a number of new additions, including a new MRI object that adds support for new MR applications such as functional imaging of the brain, spectroscopy, and MR fluoroscopy, according to DICOM committee co-chairman David Clunie.
Support for the JPEG 2000 standard wavelet-based compression scheme has been added, as has support for encoding computer-aided detection (CAD) results for chest applications. The DICOM committee has also defined a standard for transfer of images via e-mail (DICOM MIME type), and DICOM now also supports new forms of interchange media such as larger-capacity optical disks and the ability to encrypt confidential information within a DICOM object, according to NEMA.
Ten supplements, as well as over 60 minor corrections, clarifications, and additions, were also added, Clunie said. Parts 9 and 13 of the standard have been discontinued, as they are no longer necessary, NEMA said.
