Currency effects hamper Agfa’s Q1 results

Agfa HealthCare reported first-quarter sales of $384.6 million (U.S.), down 6.4% compared with the $410.7 million booked in the same period last year. The decrease was exclusively due to currency effects, however; at stable exchange rates, Agfa would have posted a 3.5% increase in revenues, according to the Mortsel, Belgium-based vendor.

For the quarter (end-March 31), Agfa's most profitable business group improved its return on sales to 19.7%. Agfa did not break out specific profit for Agfa HealthCare in its financial results. However, Agfa's technical imaging division (of which HealthCare is the largest unit), had an operating profit of $81.8 million, up 51.8% from the $53.9 million turned in the first quarter of 2002.
