Healthcare information technology (HIT) analysts Sheldon I. Dorenfest and Associates of Chicago is forecasting a growth rate of 9.3%, from $21.6 billion to $23.6 billion, in the U.S. HIT market for 2003, with another 9.3% increase, to $25.8 billion, forecast for 2004, according to the firm.
Dorenfest attributes the growth of the market to systems acquisitions such as PACS, computerized physician order entry (CPOE) applications, and other clinical information systems, such as computerized patient records, RIS, and document management. The company believes that 2003 will be the best annual HIT market growth since 1999.
The results, taken from interviews with more than 1,000 healthcare delivery systems and nearly 2,500 hospitals, show that PACS is delivering the most dramatic growth, with more than 30% of the hospitals using PACS and more than half of those PACS purchases made in the past two years, said Dorenfest. PACS purchases are planned at another 40% of U.S. hospitals interviewed within the next two years, the firm said.
