UPMC, U.S. Air Force partner in teleradiology

The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) and the U.S. Air Force Medical Services (AFMS) have launched a teleradiology initiative at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, OH.

The initiative utilizes a symmetrical model to create a load-balancing system, which  allows physicians to complete their local patient cases first, then review and service any remaining cases in the system. The model was developed by Dr. Paul Chang, director of radiology informatics at UPMC.

The system is based on an augmented Stentor (Brisbane, CA) image distribution model with a new workflow engine. The teleradiology initiative was made possible by the Integrated Medical Information Technology System (IMITS) program, a partnership between UPMC and the U.S. Department of Defense, the university said.
