The U.S. market for turnkey PACS products is projected to reach $2.01 billion by 2010, more than doubling the $1 billion in revenue achieved in this sector in 2003, according to market research firm Frost & Sullivan of San Jose, CA.
The report, North American Turnkey PACS Markets, stated that as the market shifts from traditional hardware-software solutions to software-only products, vendors would be challenged to handle complex integration processes between PACS and existing systems.
However, PACS implementation could prove to be an expensive task, since it involves complex workflow consulting, data migration, and interface creation, the firm said.
A key market driver is the low cost of disk storage and rapidly falling prices for diagnostic workstations, which are driving the demand for PACS from mid-tier community hospitals, according to Frost & Sullivan. In addition, with increasing procedure volumes and patient file sizes, community hospitals are also realizing the advantages of PACS.
