PACS pioneer Dwyer passes away

PACS pioneer and longtime researcher Samuel Dwyer, Ph.D., died on February 6.

Dwyer, nicknamed the "Father of PACS," was one of the earliest adopters of PACS technology in the mid-1970s. He implemented early systems at the University of Kansas in Kansas City; the University of California, Los Angeles; and the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.

He was the author or co-author of at least 284 papers on healthcare informatics, and was involved in the academic societies that eventually evolved into the Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM), including the Society for Computer Applications in Radiology (SCAR) and the Radiology Information Systems Consortium (RISC). He was inducted into the College of SIIM/SCAR Fellows in 2002.

The funeral service will be held Monday, February 11, in San Antonio, according to SIIM. For more information, visit SIIM's Web site.
