Carestream announces upcoming layoffs

Medical imaging vendor Carestream Health plans to reduce its workforce by 500 to 700 jobs in the next few years, with approximately half of those layoffs coming from the company's Rochester, NY, headquarters.

The job cuts in Rochester, which has a total of approximately 1,400 employees, are expected to come from general and administrative areas such as information technology, purchasing, legal, and finance. Reductions in manufacturing, R&D, and supply chain positions also are possibilities, as Carestream considers outsourcing and offshoring options to reduce expenses.

Carestream spokesman John LaBella said the company "is not taking this action due to a subpar performance on the part of the company," adding that the action is being taken because Carestream is "above benchmark cost measurements for a company of our size."

The goal, he said, is to strengthen the company for the future, and Carestream will hire people as needed and will make investments in enabling technologies, such as IT, as the need develops and to keep Carestream efficient.
