Private radiology practice Tennessee Interventional and Imaging Associates has joined the ranks of those around the U.S. having trouble negotiating contracts with United Healthcare, according to a September 18 Chattanooga Times Free Press report.
CEO Stephen Johnson, MD, told the Press that the practice has never been out of network with a major insurer. However, that is set to change January 1, 2026 under United Healthcare's Medicaid plan and dual Medicaid and Medicare plan.
At risk are pediatric services, in particular, the Press noted. The practice, founded in 2013 and owned by its radiologists, services Erlanger Health, a teaching hospital system based in Chattanooga.
The number of pediatric radiologists in the U.S. is in decline. The Harvey L. Neiman Health Policy Institute evaluated workforce trends in a September 8 report.
Those battling the insurer giant say its reimbursement rates have not kept up with growing patient needs or cost-of-living increases, which presents a challenge for groups seeking to stay independent and keep radiologists on staff.
United Healthcare's Medicaid and Medicare subsidiary in Tennessee said it remained in "active discussions" with the radiologists to renew their network relationship, according to the Press.
