AuntMinnie.com Imaging Center Radiology Insider

Dear AuntMinnie Member,

When traveling to a new destination, knowing where you are is essential for determining where you need to go. The same applies to adding a new imaging modality: knowing how many exams are needed for profitability offers a benchmark against which revenue can be measured.

PET is arguably one of the most desired modalities for a full-service imaging practice, yet its steep acquisition cost gives many radiology administrators second thoughts about the necessary capital investment. A study published this month in the American Journal of Roentgenology claims that centers in the U.S. can break even or make money by performing as few as two PET scans a day.

Researchers from Stanford University School of Medicine in Stanford, CA, and the U.S. Veterans Affairs Health Economics Resource Center in Menlo Park, CA, analyzed direct, indirect, and capital costs from eight PET centers. Their findings on the cost distribution of expenses, as well as the benefits of onsite FDG production, could make a multimillion-dollar investment in PET more palatable.

In other news, we’ve started a new feature in the Imaging Center Digital Community this week: a statistical analysis of equipment-maintenance labor charges over the past four years for MRI/CT, nuclear medicine, and general radiology. The information comes courtesy of USCS Equipment Technology Solutions’ GENISYS databank, and we’ll be providing you with more equipment data gleaned from this source in the months to come.
